This well-known spot even appears in the Heian Period novel The Tale of Genji. Visitors know the shrine by its Black Torii Gate, which still retains its tree bark and stands at the end of a charming path through a bamboo grove. Despite its simplicity, the shrine is famous for bestowing blessings for marriage (matchmaking) and childbirth in particular, and is busy with many worshippers throughout the year. On the shrine grounds is a “Turtle Stone” that is said to grant a person’s wish within one year if they rub it while praying, so do not forget to rub the turtle when you visit!
