The shrine is well known for its blessings of success, career advancement, and protection from misfortune. Located within Osaka Castle Park, it’s a perfect stop to visit alongside sightseeing at Osaka Castle. Inspired by the in-house Wakunaga Shrine, the popular “Kagayaki Mamori” (Radiance Amulet) carries the wish for “eternal youthfulness and lasting beauty.” Its charming embroidered design, featuring a plant that always grows upward in search of sunlight, symbolizes positivity and vitality, making it a beloved talisman for beauty, health, and longevity. Otori Taisha Shrine is a historic and prestigious shrine known as the Ichinomiya (highest-ranked shrine) of the former Izumi Province. It enshrines the legendary hero Yamato Takeru and Otorinomuraji no Oyagami. Based on the many tales of Yamato Takeru overcoming great challenges, the shrine is believed to grant blessings for victory and protection from misfortune. Its clear acrylic omamori, symbolizing the idea of “seeing clearly into the future,” has become a huge hit on social media. It is said that if you hold the charm up toward the main hall and take a photo, it brings even greater blessings. When held to the light, the design shines in rainbow colors, as if illuminating your path ahead with good fortune. Tsuyunoten Shrine—affectionately known as Ohatsu Tenjin—is famous as the setting of Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s masterpiece Sonezaki Shinju (The Love Suicides at Sonezaki). Inspired by the deep love of the story’s protagonists, the shrine has become a well-known spot for love and relationship blessings, attracting many visitors. One of its highlights is the “Momoiro Omamori”, which allows you to create your own personalized charm. You can choose from over 50 types of delicately embroidered pouches and combine them with a wish card of your choice. Since the embroidery designs are updated regularly, you can create a one-of-a-kind omamori that is truly unique to you. Shimogamo Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto and is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. It enshrines Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto, the deity said to have helped develop ancient Kyoto, and Tamayori Hime no Mikoto, a goddess associated with mystical legends. The shrine is widely known for its blessings related to love, safe childbirth, and beauty. Its “lace omamori”, created to bring good fortune and happiness, has become especially popular among women. Featuring delicate embroidery on a transparent fabric, the design is said to embody the wish that the divine power of the gods can be received more strongly, making it both a beautiful and meaningful charm. Mikami Shrine is located near the famous bamboo grove in Arashiyama and is the only shrine in Japan dedicated to the god of hair. The enshrined deity is Fujiwara no Masayuki, a real historical figure from the Kamakura period who served as an official court hairdresser. Today, professionals in the beauty and hair industry, as well as those wishing for beautiful, healthy hair, visit from all over Japan. One of its most popular charms is the “Fukugami Mamori”, featuring a transparent pouch with motifs of scissors and combs. Since ancient times, combs have been considered protective items against evil, and well-maintained hair is said to attract good fortune. This charm is cherished for its blessings of protecting hair health and enhancing its beauty and shine. Heian Jingu Shrine is one of Kyoto’s most iconic shrines, known for its massive torii gate set against the blue sky and its vivid vermilion shrine buildings. It enshrines Emperor Kanmu, who moved the capital to Kyoto in 794, and Emperor Komei of the late Edo period. Its beautifully translucent “Kanau Mamori” (Wish-Granting Charm) features designs inspired by weeping cherry blossoms and irises found within the shrine grounds. Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater: A Comedy Theater to Visit at Night When Staying in Osaka
Osaka is known as the heart of Japanese comedy, where a wide variety of comedy shows are held every day. This time, we experienced a comedy show that can be enjoyed in just one hour during your trip and is especially recommended for international visitors. The performance features simple English and non-verbal comedy, making it easy to enjoy even without understanding Japanese. Index 1. What is Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater? 2. Access to Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater is a theater located in Dotonbori, one of the must-visit sightseeing areas on any trip to Osaka. Comedians from Tokyo, Osaka, and all over Japan perform here, making it a lively hub of Japanese comedy. The theater is operated by Yoshimoto Kogyo, which was founded in 1912. With a history of over 100 years, the company is best known for managing comedians, but it also produces TV programs, plans events, and creates films, making it one of Japan’s most famous and influential entertainment companies—known to virtually everyone in Japan. Even Japanese travelers often say, “I want to see comedy at Yoshimoto when I visit Osaka.” This hugely popular entertainment is offered in English four times a month, with shows held from 7:00–8:00 PM or 8:00–9:00 PM. As the days and times vary by month, be sure to check the official website in advance. Same-day tickets can be purchased at Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater from one hour before the first show starts until the end of the performance. The price is 2,500 yen per adult (tax included) and includes one drink, with alcohol available. You can enjoy the show while having a beer or juice. If you prefer to buy in advance, tickets are also available through Veltra. Please note that changes and refunds are not available for advance purchases. ・All seats are unreserved (free seating). ・Children aged 4 and under (under 110 cm in height) are free if they sit on a guardian’s lap. In February 2026, we visited Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater and discovered three key reasons why this show is so special. 1) You can enjoy many styles of comedy in just one hour On the day we attended, the program was packed with variety — starting with non-verbal comedy that anyone can enjoy, followed by Japan’s traditional comedy style called manzai, and ending with Osaka’s hugely popular comedy show, Shinkigeki. The show opens with a surprising performance: a comedian plays the harmonica while spinning a hula hoop and even creates art using paper. From his calm appearance, you would never imagine such an act — seeing it live is part of the fun. Manzai is a traditional Japanese comedy style in which two comedians stand behind a microphone and perform a short dialogue routine, playing the roles of the silly one (boke) and the strict one (tsukkomi). Before the performance begins, the host explains uniquely Japanese terms and concepts, so even first-time visitors can relax and enjoy the show. Next comes a performer with a striking visual impact who delivers one trick after another, filling the theater with laughter — and then it’s time for a short break. In the second half, you can enjoy Shinkigeki in English. Shinkigeki is a group comedy show performed by several actors and is extremely popular with Japanese audiences as well. Being able to experience all of these different styles of Japanese comedy in just one hour makes this show an excellent value and a must-see during your Osaka trip. 2) You can interact with the performers The host is great at energizing the crowd and keeps the show moving by chatting with the audience at a lively pace. Sometimes, well-known comedians who appear on Japanese TV also take the stage. On the day we visited, the famous comedian Masashi Kumada joined the show. He walked around the theater and handed out his original goods to the audience. Not only do you get a souvenir, but you also have the chance to interact with the comedian up close — and you can even take photos together. *The distribution of goods varies depending on the performance. 3) You can take part in the comedy show Not everyone, but some audience members are invited onto the stage to participate in the show. The segment you can join is the very popular Shinkigeki. The host comes directly to your seat to invite participants. What role you will play is a surprise until you step on stage, but don’t worry — it’s nothing difficult. If you are chosen, it will surely become an unforgettable memory of your trip. Yoshimoto Dotonbori Theater allows food and drinks inside the venue. You can purchase items in the lobby, and during the show, simply scan the QR code at your seat and the staff will bring food and drinks directly to you. The nearest stations are Namba Station, Osaka-Namba Station, and Namba Station, all about a 7-minute walk away. You can also reach Namba Station directly from Kansai International Airport via the Nankai Railway, making it convenient for visitors who want to enjoy a show on the very day they arrive in Japan. The theater is located on the 6th floor of the Nakaza Kuidaore Building, marked by one of Dotonbori’s symbols, the Kuidaore Taro statue. After entering the building, take the elevator on the right-hand side up to the 6th floor, and you will find the theater immediately. The theater is also close to the famous Glico sign and Hozenji Temple, making it easy to visit before or after sightseeing or dinner.
