As the highest-ranked Zen temple in Japan, Nanzenji’s entire precinct is designated a national historic site. It features numerous cultural treasures, including the Hojo (Main Hall), the Sanmon Gate, and the Hojo Garden, a nationally recognized scenic landmark. The temple grounds are stunning in all seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to lush green maple leaves in early summer, and brilliant autumn foliage. The view from the 22-meter-tall Sanmon Gate during cherry blossom and autumn seasons is particularly breathtaking. A must-visit spot within the temple is Suirokaku, a picturesque red brick aqueduct that blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western architecture. This scenic landmark, often featured in films and anime, attracts visitors from around the world.
Nearby, you can also visit the Keage Incline, a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, making it easy to explore both on foot.
