Kodai-ji Temple was founded by Nene in memory of her husband, the military leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was one of Japan’s Three Great Unifiers. The temple’s greatest attraction is the magnificent “Kodai-ji makie,” which is said to be a masterpiece of Momoyama Period art. Makie is a traditional craft whereby gold or silver dust is sprinkled over lacquer work before the picture has dried. Many examples of gorgeous makie remain here, including a miniature shrine inside the mausoleum where Hideyoshi and Nene are enshrined.
