The historic streets of the Kitano Ijinkan provide a glimpse into Kobe’s past. During the Meiji Era, when Japan first opened its ports to the world, Kitano became known as the international quarter. It attracted a large influx of international traders and diplomats who developed communities and commercial offices here. The area has a charming and somewhat artistic European atmosphere. There are plenty of boutiques, cafes, and restaurants for visitors who wish to take a rest, soak up the atmosphere with delicious refreshments, and shop for souvenirs.

These 19th century residences and consulate buildings still remain today and are open to the public. You can tour many of them for a small entrance fee. Be sure to visit Moegi House, the former residence of the US Consul General. Named for the beautiful yellow-green color of its exterior, this architecture is representative of the period. The veranda on the 2nd floor offers a gorgeous view of the neighborhood.
