Kennin-ji is Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, founded during the Kamakura period. Despite being located in the bustling Gion area, its spacious grounds offer a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to explore. It is a historically significant temple, best known for housing Tawaraya Sōtatsu’s folding screen painting Wind God and Thunder God (a National Treasure) from the early 1600s. Another highlight is the stunning Twin Dragons ceiling painting in the lecture hall.
