Constructed in 778, Kiyomizu-dera Temple contains numerous artifacts that are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties, and it was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1994 as one of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.” A famous idiom in Japanese is “jumping from the stage at Kiyomizu-dera.” The temple actually has a stage built at the top of a precipitous cliff, and so this expression means making a bold decision, as if you were jumping off of the temple’s stage.
